One of the more known sights of El Nido is the lagoons. What’s so special with these lagoons anyway? Why are they most often talked about?
Aside from being naturally a beautiful sight, it’s like your place of respite from all the island hoppings and beach activities. A sanctuary where you can enjoy the picturesque views and relax for just a little while.
And El Nido has no shortage of lagoons that you can explore! Three of the more famous lagoons in El Nido can be found in Bacuit Bay, particularly in Miniloc Island. They are the Big, Small, and Secret Lagoons. All amazing, all offering different sceneries.
Big Lagoon – You will first notice the majestic limestone walls when you approach this lagoon. A wonderful sight to behold, take time to admire these natural wonders that was built over time. Seeing it feels like stepping into a gorgeous island photograph. But this one’s better because this is the real thing.
Lush greens, limestone and clear water. Speaking of the sea, be amazed how the boats look like as if they’re floating on water – this is because of the crystal clear waters of the area.
Do make sure to visit Big Lagoon when the waters are high though, as boats will have difficulties entering the area when the tides are low. It’s best to go check it out when the tides are high to better appreciate the lagoon.
Aside from that, if you’re lucky you could even catch a glimpse of the sea turtles too!
Small Lagoon – The lagoon may be small in size but it has so much to offer! In retrospect, it’s not really what you can say a small lagoon. It is small when you compare it though to the Big Lagoon’s size. Probably it was just named relative to its bigger “sibling”, Big Lagoon. The entrance of this lagoon is one of its attractions too, you enter a narrow opening between two large limestone rocks.
The waters inside are calmer and colder compared to the rest of the sea, this is because the rocks and the limestone formations serves as walls against the sun and the rolling waves from the sea. Take advantage of this so swim around the area and enjoy the cooler temperature here. You may also kayak around the lagoon to enjoy its waters.
Secret Lagoon – A tricky place to get into but we promise you, it’s pretty rewarding once you get to see it. At first, you may not even guess that there’s a lagoon within the premises, but there really is, pretty amazing how people discovered this lagoon. It’s not really that visible at first because the entrance is just a small hole along the limestone wall near the beach. The beach where the hole is pretty secluded itself so it’s just wonderful to see that there’s a ‘secret” entrance! Swim or crawl to the hole to see the secret within!
Like the small lagoon, the water inside are calm and a lot cooler as it’s more shaded and separate from the rest of the sea.
Cadlao Lagoon – This lagoon can be found on the largest island in El Nido – Cadlao Island. This island boasts of so many stunning sights and one of it is the Cadlao Lagoon. After exploring this large island (the highest peak of El Nido is also found here!), you may take a rest in this lagoon. Great area for travelers to hang-out, chill, and swim.
In front of Cadlao island is the famous Helicopter Island/Dilumacad Island. The island known for (you guessed it, no surprise) its helicopter like shape.
And these are the popular lagoons you will get to see in El Nido. As you see there’s a lot to explore and enjoy! Furthermore, we will also share tips in exploring these wonders.
Tips in Exploring the El Nido Lagoons:
- Island hopping tours in El Nido is arranged based on the proximity of the sights to each other. Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, and Secret Lagoon are all found in Miniloc island, so they belong to the tour package that goes around Bacuit Bay which is El Nido Island Hopping Tour A.
While Cadlao Island is visited during the island Hopping Tour D as it is within this package’s area.
So before proceeding to your sightseeing, do make sure what tour package does your chosen lagoon destination belong to.
You can’t ask the boatmen to just take you to all of the known lagoons because they could be far from each other, the distance and time won’t allow you to. That’s the very reason why the sights were distributed into four tour packages.
- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Tours would take you almost the whole day and expect the sun to be merciless when its out. Aside from your swimwear you could use a rashguard or light, clothing to protect yourself from the sun in between swimming. Wearing a hat is a great idea if you are set on exploring the shore or beyond also.
Many would balk at footwear because they could be more comfortable in barefoot. However, there could be sharp rocks or corals that you can’t see when you are submerged in the water. Also, you will need some protection for your feet if you do a bit of trekking.
Also, wear your sunblock! Do yourself a favor, you will spend hours under the sun and a sunburn might kill the fun.
- Protect the environment. Lagoons are good areas to rest in and have your meals but please do not leave your trash behind. Do not litter and keep the shores and the waters free from trash. Be mindful also of the coral reefs, do not touch or destroy them. Do not take them as a “souvenir”. Instead, bring a camera and take lots of photos to keep the memories of El Nido with you always.
- Safety first. It may be tempting to break away from the tour group or explore your own way but do remember that safety is paramount. Always follow what the tour guide advices and if you need to explore a bit, ask permission or inform the tour guide if this is possible.
